Flapteks: With the publication of this novel in 1962 Etienne Leroux established himself as the most outstanding and original Afrikaans novelist. Awarded the Hertzog Prize - the highest Afrikaans literary award - this year, it became the centre of a furious, nation-wide controversy which has not yet abated. It is a satirical fantasy in which the dilemma of modern man - and not only in South Africa - is examined with detachment, originality and penetration. Beneath its humour and its often extravangant fantasy, it is a deeply serious, moving and disturbing book. It should make every reader - and especially South Africans of both White language groups - think deeply about the many conflicting values and ideologies in which we are all involved. This translation has been done by one of South Africa's foremost English poets and critics.
